Why May is Marbella’s Best Kept Secret (and the Swish Guide to Making the Most of it)

Marbella old town

Ask anyone who has been to Marbella in August, and they will tell you it was brilliant. The weather was perfect. The beach clubs were incredible. The nights went on forever.

If you then ask them whether they would do it again, a fair number will pause. The queues. The prices. The beach at midday, when the temperature hits 38 degrees, and finding a patch of shade becomes a challenge.

Now ask the guests who come in May. They tend to look slightly smug about it.

May is the month when Marbella gets the balance right. The weather is warm without being punishing. The beach clubs are opening for the season with the energy of a fresh start. The restaurants you wanted to try in August but could not get a table at will take your booking. The roads are clear. And the pool at your villa is there for you and your group alone, without competition from twelve other families.

We have been watching guests arrive in May for years. It consistently produces the most relaxed, well-paced trips. Here is what makes it work.

The Weather Is Almost Perfect

Marbella in May sits between 22 and 28 degrees during the day, with evenings cooling to a comfortable 15 or 16. Sunset falls around 9.30 pm, which means long, unhurried evenings outdoors. It does not rain.

For guests arriving from the UK, those numbers represent a real shift. For anyone planning to spend serious time outside, at the pool, on the terrace, or walking the old town, May temperatures work well from morning to late evening. You can be outside from 8 am until 11 pm without any part of the day being uncomfortable. That is not the case in August, when the hours between noon and 4 pm often mean retreating inside.

The sea temperature in May is around 18-19 degrees, which is cool but swimmable. Most guests who come specifically for beach swimming wait until June, but for those staying in a villa with a private pool, it is not an issue. Our properties have heated pool options available from the moment you arrive.

The Beach Club Season Begins

This is what May does that no other month can replicate. The beach clubs open.

Nikki Beach has been running since April, but the full season gets underway in May. Ocean Club opens on 1 May with a proper launch event. Mogli begins its weekly programming. Playa Padre starts Boho Sunday, which has become one of the most distinctive recurring events in Marbella. NAO Pool Club opens Rico on Tuesday evenings. The energy of a new season, before any of it has become routine, is unlike what you get in July when everyone is operating at peak capacity.

For guests who have always wanted to experience Marbella’s beach club culture without fighting for a sunbed, May is the answer. You can book in advance, get the spot you want, and experience these venues at their most enthusiastic rather than their most pressured.

Our concierge arranges beach club reservations for all Swish guests. In May, that process is considerably easier than in August, and the experience is consistently higher quality. Please let us know which venues you want to visit before you arrive, and we will make sure you are not left to work it out in the morning.

The May Bank Holiday Brings Its Own Energy

The UK May bank holiday, which falls on 25 May in 2026, turns Marbella into something different for that week. The town fills with British visitors who have collectively decided this is their moment. The clubs bring in headline acts. Ocean Club runs special events. The marina is busy. There is a celebratory atmosphere that is hard to manufacture, and that May delivers naturally every year.

For guests staying in a Swish villa during bank holiday week, this energy is available to dip into as much or as little as you want. You have a private space to return to. The decision about how much of the buzz you engage with is entirely yours.

If your group wants the full bank holiday experience, our concierge can organise it from start to finish. If you want to avoid it entirely and spend the week at the pool reading books, you can do that, too. The villa does not change. Marbella has more going on in the background.

Golf in Its Best Condition

The Golf Valley in Nueva Andalucia and the courses spread across the wider area are in good condition in May. The fairways are green after the cooler months, the heat is manageable at any tee time, and the courses are less busy than they become once the full summer season gets going.

For guests who play, May means you can book an early round and be back at the villa pool by early afternoon, with the whole evening still ahead of you. That rhythm does not work in August when an early start still means two hours in genuine heat before the back nine. In May, you can play a full round without the heat ever becoming a factor.

Several of our villas in Nueva Andalucia sit within minutes of the best courses. If golf is part of your trip, let us know, and we can make sure you are well-positioned.

The Pricing Makes More Sense

Villa rates in May are below the peak-season prices that take effect in June and run through September. For guests with any flexibility in timing, May often delivers the same property at a better price than the weeks that follow.

The villa is identical. The sun is almost identical. The beach clubs are open. The restaurants are available. The difference is that May rates reflect shoulder-season pricing rather than the premium of peak demand.

This is not a secret the industry particularly wants to shout from the rooftops, but it is the truth. If you are planning a luxury trip to Marbella and your dates are flexible, May is the best time to get the most for your money.

What a Typical May Day Looks Like

Morning coffee on the terrace as the sun comes up properly, which in May happens early. Pool from mid-morning, when the temperature means you actually want to be in it rather than sheltering from it. Lunch either at the villa or at one of the beachfront restaurants, where you will actually get a table. Afternoon, as you choose. Dinner at 9 pm, which is when Marbella eats, at a restaurant our concierge booked before you arrived. Back to the villa by midnight, or not, depending entirely on the group.

That is May done well. It is not a compromise version of a Marbella holiday. It is, for many guests, the best version.

Which Villas Work Best in May?

Almost any villa in the collection is excellent in May. A heated pool is the one specification worth prioritising, since May mornings can still feel fresh, and a cold pool at 8 am loses some of its appeal.

Location depends on what you want from the trip. The Golden Mile puts you close to the beach and within easy reach of the bank holiday activity if that is part of the plan. Nueva Andalucía is the natural base for golf-focused stays and is quieter, despite being 10 minutes from Puerto Banús. Sierra Blanca offers complete privacy, and the mountain views are extraordinary in May when the surrounding landscape is green rather than dry.

If you are planning a May trip and want honest advice on which property fits your group, get in touch. We know the properties, and we know May.
